Common Human / community initiatives
Real projects. Shared experience. Stronger community connections.
Peer mentors help develop, deliver and support practical community projects, alongside opportunities to mentor, learn from one another and contribute what they know.
It's about turning real experiences and useful ideas into something people can take part in, shape and support.
From an idea to a community project
Listen, share lived experience and shape an idea.
Help make practical, local activities happen.
Keep learning, connecting and improving together.
What the project does
The Peer Mentor Project brings people together around practical ideas that can make everyday life and community participation a little easier.
Peer mentors contribute lived experience, local knowledge and a willingness to listen. They may help plan an activity, work with community partners, support delivery or connect someone with an opportunity to participate.
Mentoring and project work sit alongside one another: some people come to learn, some to share what they know, and many do both.
Participation and care
Different ages, experiences and interests call for different kinds of activities.
The wider Peer Mentor Project works across this age range, but not every activity is suitable or available for every age group. Eligibility, consent, supervision, safeguarding arrangements and any relevant checks are considered for each activity before participation.
For children and young people, activities involve age-appropriate arrangements and parent or guardian involvement where required. Venue-based or nightlife activities have their own access and participation requirements.
A Common Human Peer Mentor Project initiative
Prevention where possible. Support when it’s needed. Connection through community.
Night Lite is a practical community project being developed by the Common Human Peer Mentor Project. It brings a small, discreet pack of useful supplies together with clear, non-judgemental information about prevention, harm reduction and where to find help.
The proposed packs are intended to make practical information and support easier to find during a night out. They cannot guarantee safety, prevent every harm or replace professional or emergency assistance.
Provide 1,000 Night Lite packs through participating Melbourne nightlife venues and events.
A compact collection of practical items and plain-language help information, with final contents subject to project development.
Items such as a drink cover, condoms and lubricant.
Proposed hydration supplies and a sick bag, with guidance for use.
Cards explaining what to do next, who to contact, and how to reach venue staff or external services.
A proposed drink-screening card is only a screening aid. A result cannot confirm that a drink is safe. If something feels wrong, seek help from venue staff, medical services or emergency services as appropriate.
Ways to be part of it
People, venues and community organisations can all help a practical project take shape.
Explore mentoring or community activities that suit your interests, circumstances and the activity's requirements.
Offer time and practical help, with responsibilities and support agreed for the activity.
Bring lived experience, useful skills or ideas that can help a project develop.
Introduce a nightlife venue, event organiser or local space that may be able to help.
